Table of Contents

Most businesses treat Google AI as one thing to optimize for. It is two, and the gap between them is wider than the family resemblance suggests.

Ahrefs compared the two surfaces across thousands of query pairs in late 2025 and found they cited the same URLs about 13% of the time, while the answers were roughly 86% semantically similar. A business can be the source Google quotes in one and completely absent from the other, for the same question, on the same day. Understanding this distinction, along with how AI search engines cite content, can help you refine your AI SEO strategy for each surface and open new avenues for success.

The Simple Version: What Each One Is

AI Overviews

It is the AI-generated summary box that appears above the traditional blue links on an ordinary search. You do not ask for it. You run a normal search, and Google decides whether to show one. The ten blue links are still sitting underneath, and the user is still on a results page with somewhere else to go.

AI Mode

A separate destination you choose to enter. Once inside, you are in a conversation: you ask, it answers, you follow up, and it holds the thread. No blue links are waiting underneath. The answer is the destination rather than a summary of somewhere else to visit.

Why they behave so differently

Both read Google’s index, and both frequently arrive at the same conclusion. What separates them is how much work each one does to get there.

THE KEY DIFFERENCE

An AI Overview takes the question it was given and assembles a summary from it. AI Mode breaks a single prompt into a set of related searches, runs them together, and builds the answer from everything that comes back. Google calls this query fan-out, and it is the design difference that explains most of the rest.

The short version is that AI Mode casts a much wider net, so it reaches deeper and less obvious pages than an Overview does.

AI Overviews AI Mode
How you reach it Appears on a normal search You enter it deliberately
The experience A summary above blue links A conversation with follow-ups
How it retrieves A quick synthesis of one query Fan-out: many sub-queries at once
What it favours Pages that already rank well Deeper pages answering specific angles
User mindset Still browsing, may click through Wants a direct answer, less likely to click
Best measured in Search Console AI Overview data Harder to measure; conversational and personalised

What to do differently for each platform?

For AI Overviews: make the answer easy to lift

There is a common belief that Overviews mostly quote whatever already ranks on page one, and it is worth being careful with it. BrightEdge’s tracking has consistently found that only around a sixth of the sources cited in Overviews also appear in Google’s organic top ten.

FOR AI OVERVIEWS

If you are wondering how to structure content for AI search engines, start here: a page that is relevant to the question and states the answer near the top, in a sentence, is easier to pull into a summary than one that builds toward the point over four paragraphs.

For AI Mode: cover the branches, not just the trunk

AI Mode fans out; every sub-question it generates is a separate opportunity to be the page that answers one of them. A site that addresses only the headline topic has one point of contact with a system built to explore in several directions at once.

Take your main service and write down every question somebody asks on the way to choosing you. What it costs and what changes the price. How long it takes. What the alternatives are and when one of them is the better choice. Whether it suits their particular situation. What happens if it does not work.

THE FAN-OUT OPPORTUNITY

Each of those is a plausible branch of a fan-out, and each one you answer properly is another way for the surface to reach you.

Fan-out rewards a site that has genuinely covered a subject, not a site that has produced a page named after every phrase in it.

The groundwork that serves both

Before optimizing for either surface specifically, a few things decide whether you are eligible for either.

Access and snippet settings

Both surfaces are part of Search, and both read Google’s index, so the controls that govern them are the ordinary ones. Googlebot should be able to reach and render the page.

Blocking Google-Extended affects Gemini and other Google AI products. It does not remove you from AI Overviews or AI Mode, and blocking crawlers belonging to other AI companies has no bearing on either. If you want to be visible on Google’s AI surfaces, the requirement is the same one it has always been: let Googlebot in.

Machine-readable facts

Once a surface can reach a page, the question is whether it can tell what it is looking at. A price, a service area, a set of opening hours: obvious to a person, ambiguous to a system unless they are labelled. Structured data helps both identify your business correctly and pull your facts out without guessing, which is the groundwork underneath any citation.

Fewer, better pages

More pages is not the route to visibility on either surface. Thin and unoriginal content is a big part of why AI search ignores generic content: it dilutes what your site is recognizably about and gives both surfaces more noise to sort through before they find anything worth quoting. Here, content pruning is the solution.

What this means for a local business?

FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES

AI Overviews are where conventional local work pays off most visibly, because they appear on the searches your customers already run. A complete and accurate Google Business Profile, an active review profile, and service pages that answer the obvious questions cleanly put you in a reasonable position when somebody searches for what you do in the area you serve.

AI Mode is where the longer questions go. Somebody who types their whole situation rather than a service name, and then asks two follow-ups, is describing something an Overview was never really built to handle.

The businesses that do well there are the ones whose sites have answered the cost question, the timeline question, the is-this-right-for-me question, and the what-are-my-alternatives question somewhere, rather than leaving all four to a consultation call.

Logik Digital runs audits that check both, alongside the other major AI engines, and turn the gaps into a prioritised plan. Connect with Logik Digital, and we’ll run a Google AI visibility audit and frame a strategy for your business to rank on the overviews with citations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, and the same is true of AI Overviews. Both surfaces cite plenty of pages that are not in the organic top ten. AI Mode’s fan-out simply creates more distinct openings, because a page answering one narrow branch of a question can be pulled in even when it is nowhere near the main term.

It can. When the summary fully answers the question, many people have no reason to click. When it only partly satisfies a more involved question, it tends to send better-qualified visitors through. Informational queries lose the most. Queries where somebody needs to book or buy still drive visits.

No. Google treats both as part of Search, so the only levers are the normal ones like nosnippet and max-snippet, which apply across the board and also shrink your regular search snippets. No switch removes you from Overviews while keeping you in AI Mode.

The mechanics are the same; the experience is not. On a phone, an Overview can fill most of the first screen, pushing the ordinary results and the local pack further down than it would on a desktop, which makes it considerably more dominant for the phone-heavy local searcher. AI Mode feels much the same across devices.

For most local businesses, Overviews, because they appear on searches customers are running today. AI Mode is the longer game. The choice is less painful than it sounds, since a good profile, real reviews, and clearly structured pages strengthen both at once. Where this leaves you

Search is shifting from a list of destinations to a series of answers, and that changes what visibility means for a business. Rankings still matter, but being understood, trusted, and remembered matters more.

At Logik Digital, an AI SEO agency in Toronto, Google AI is not one target. It is two surfaces that share a brain and disagree about who to credit. AI Overviews reward the pages that already rank and still send some clicks. Most businesses have never seen their visibility measured separately across AI Overviews and AI Mode.
